Lt. Henry Gettman, somewhere in Europe with the 99th Recon Troop, 99th Infantry Division, WW II.
After VE-Day dad remained in war torn Europe for two more years with the Army of Occupation, first as a platoon leader with the 83rd Recon Troop, 83rd Infantry Division; then as the Displaced Persons Officer for Hq, 83rd Infantry Division; DPO for Hq, 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division Artillery; and finally DPO for Hq, 4th Constabulary Regiment in Austria. Next was Ft Lewis, Washington and the 717th Tank Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, which was soon to be reorganized as the 72nd Tank Battalion. As the Army was down-sizing from the war and many changes were being made, dad gave up his commission and left the army, only to return a few months later as a MSgt in the newly formed 72nd Tank Battalion. The 2nd Inf Div was soon bound for Korea, the first complete division to leave the states for the war in Korea. Dad received another commission to WOJG upon returning from this war, having served as the battalion motor officer the entire 10 months in combat. In 1957 he took another brief rest from the military and gave up his commission as WO-2, only to return two months later as a MSgt again. He had also received a commission in the reserves as a Major. In the years to follow, dad was to see tours in cold war Germany and Korea; the jungles of Panama where he contracted malaria; combat support in Viet Nam and Thailand. He retired at Ft Lewis in Dec 71, with over 37 years service (11 years, 3 months overseas), at the rank of SGM. His decorations and awards included:
